Italian Peppers

Piccalina (Sport) Peppers

Piccalina means small or tiny in Italian.  Immigrants claim to have brought the seeds of the tiny pepper from the old country in their pockets.  Whether this is tru or not, we don’t know, we’re just glad they got here.

Piccalina hot peppers are picked just before they ripen, then pickled just before they ripen, then pickled in vinegar.  They are a Chicago original, created as a topping for hot dogs.  One hundred years later, they are still a Chicago favorite.
